The setting of raw seaweed quality standard was agreed during the recent meeting of the Seaweed Industry association of the Philippines (SIAP) held last October 6, 2008 at the Cebu Country Club, Cebu City.

The agreed raw seaweed standard set by seaweed processors are as follows:

Country Philippines Indonesia
Moisture content: 35% to 42% 35% to 40%
Foreign Content: 1% to 3% 1% to 3%
Maturity farming Period: 45 Days 45 Days
Retention: 10% standard, gradually up to 20% 10% standard, gradually up to 20%

SIAP members also agreed that there should be absolutely no salting and mixing up with spinosum species to cottoni species which undermines the quality of carageenan products.

The said agreement was reach among seaweed processors due to unethical practices done by some farmers and traders who mixed salt and spinosum with dried raw cottoni in order to increase their earnings.
